For lots of American’s that means it will be a day to get ready and go to house of worship of your choice and do your Sunday thing.
For those who are of the church of Christ affiliation (note I didn’t say ‘denomination’, like other folks do), it will be a day of gathering with those of like precious Faith, singing several songs, having several prayers, a preaching service where one used to get one’s toes stepped on (and with good reason, probably) but not as much these days and should a response be made at the invitation (known elsewhere as the alter call) possibly you’ll get to watch as one or maybe several one’s wash away their sins in the act of Baptism… otherwise known as ‘hold’em under till they blubber’ and be added to the Church just like in the Book of Acts.. chapter 2 verse 38 and following.
It was the singing part I liked the best when growing up… especially when the voice changed a bit so I could hit the high notes, unless the song leader pitched it too high… then it was baritone/bass for me.
Our preacher back then in those good old days was Jackie Fox. While he had no problem stepping on toes back then, he was as equally good at singing. I remember we had just learned a new tune named “The New Song”. Ol’ Jackie had no problem hitting those tenor notes… man.
Jackie went Home a few years later leaving behind a wife and two children. I went to his service and boy it was packed… which was no surprise as Jackie was well known and well respected. They didn’t sing that “New Song” that day, but in my mind I heard it sung… heard ol’ Jackie hitting those high notes too.
It’s been a while since I’ve heard a congregation sing that song, so when I found it on the ol’ YouTube… well I had to share..
Sort of as in memory of not only Jackie, but all those whom I’ve known and loved through the years…especially my Mama and Pops.
I hope y’all enjoy listening to it as much as I do…
